Band History
This band has truly been forged by fire, from roaring flames to herat warming embers. Coming together through various bands and lineups, in 2006, The Gaslight Anthem as we know and love them took pen to paper.
The titles of each album are signifiers to their struggle, pain and loss faced not just by the members of the band, but of the past and present of greater concepts; broken hearts, empty dreams and the loss of dear friends. Through their Punk – Rock chords combined with emotional vocals, each song, every album is a nostalgic trip, yet resonates so clearly with the moment.
Since debuting in 2006 with ‘Sink or Swim’, although TGA did not gain commercial recognition, they were a critic favourite, due to their rock/funk blend combined, with what has popularly become known as ‘Sprignsteen-esque’ vocals of Fallon.
They hit true success within the UK and Irish borders, charting high with their second album ‘The ‘59 Sound’ and opened for Bruce Springsteen in 2009 at Hyde Park Calling, they also performed at Glastonbury and Pinkpop. ‘American Slang’ followed with equal acclaim and out selling their debut album.
They released two more albums between 2012-2015, ‘Handwritten’ and ‘Get Hurt’. While ‘Handwritten’ was acknowledged by Fallon as a throwback to their more popular ‘The ‘59 Sound’, ‘Get Hurt’ explored a new sound for them.
This creative and musical exploration, while delivering two amazing albums, also hinted towards a discord in the band’s direction.
During this period they faced multiple challenges. On July 29, 2015, the band announced an indefinite hiatus following their European summer tour, which concluded at Reading Festival on Sunday 30 August. There were many varied reasons, both personal and professional.
In 2018 in celebration of their 10th anniversary of ‘The ’59 Sound’, The Gaslight Anthem reformed to tour together temporarily. Through North America and Europe, they came together with their loyal fans, and commemorated a significant milestone. They then resumed their hiatus.
On March 25, 2022, the band announced on Instagram that it was reuniting and working on its sixth studio album, with Brian Fallon posting: “I am very pleased to announce to you all that The Gaslight Anthem is returning to full time status as a band.’
